ComMEATted -Committed to the responsible development of meat replacement products and practices: comparing multidimensional barriers and potentials in European countries

Our project aims to explore ways to encourage consumers to include alternative proteins such as cell-based, plant-based and insect-based meats in their diets. We want to develop a better understanding of how these novel meat replacements can be responsibly produced and supplied in Europe to increase consumer acceptance. In particular, we want to understand how consumers make choices about these products.
We are collaborating with international partners from a range of fields and an advisory board of professional stakeholders to answer our research questions. Our current focus is on exploratory research involving consumers and food industry stakeholders. Our aim is to understand the different narratives used by different stakeholders such as the food industry, consumer organisations, media and religious communities in different countries such as Austria, France, Ireland, Norway and Romania. We are looking at how these narratives influence the regulation of novel foods at both national and EU level, how they are labelled, and consumers' attitudes towards them.
Our research will provide valuable insights for stakeholders and policy-makers at national and European level as we compare different European countries.
