How to help athletes perform their best when it counts the most? Peter Gröpel provides a systematic review of choking interventions in sports.

Athletes often face high performance expectancies and pressure in competition. In such situations, they may underperform despite the existence of superb skills and high motivation - a phenomenon that has been called "choking". Peter Gröpel and Christopher Mesagno provide the first systematic review on what works for athletes under pressure. They identified a number of choking intervention (n = 13). Of them, the most effective were pre-performance routines, quiet eye training, left-hand contractions, and acclimatisation training. This article may help athletes and coaches select and implement effective strategies to improve performance under pressure.
